What is a podcast?
Project: Radio Eureka!
Imagine you are producing a series of radio-style podcasts on the topic of scientific discoveries and related ethical concerns.
You will make THREE podcast episodes to tell the full story.
SPECIFICATIONS
Each episode will be 5 to 6 minutes long and may be presented in any format as long as it is engaging, structured and critically informative.
Each episode should feature a theme music and a title.
Each episode should end with a sort of cliff-hanger to keep listeners interested to tune in to the next episode.
Each episode must be accompanied by a complete transcript.
CONTENT
The first episode will focus on the facts of the scientific discovery and its applications.
The second episode will focus on the advantages and disadvantages brought about by the discovery. Consider these pros and cons from at least three perspectives.
The final episode will wrap up the programme by evaluating the benefits and detriments and proposing a final analysis of the issue.
SUBMISSIONS and GRADING
At the end of the IT Week, you will need to submit TWO episodes. The final installment is due at the end of Week 2.
You will be assessed on a four-star rating system on the breadth and depth of information and analysis, creativity of presentation and technical finesse.
THE TECHNICAL STUFF (Mrs Yong's tried and tested way i.e.)
For recording and making your podcasts, download the Audacity software.
Next, sign up for an account with Posterous.com to post your podcasts.
Post a link (below) to the platform on which you are using to publish your podcast so that we can all tune in to the podcasts via the RSS feed.
E.g. Mrs Yong's Posterous
I suspect you can embed an RSS feed on this page. Click on the TV icon in the Editor bar and follow the instructions accordingly.
The Lessons...
LESSON 1: Exploring Podcasting - Content and Structure
Before you start tinkering with the technical bits, first, watch the YouTube video about what Podcasting is. Then, go on to listen to the sample podcasts posted on this page. Each group has to pick one sample to deconstruct. You will collaborate on the task using Google Docs. You can either embed it here or post the link to the Doc so that I can access it.
In the desconstruction, you will outline the structure and contents of the podcast.
Example: The Future of Oil Male Narrator: "Earth and Sky" + Opening theme music - generic introduction to the programme Willem Schulte's Voice: “We are not running out of oil yet. The oil which we will produce in the future will be harder to recover, will therefore have a higher cost, and will also need the environmental solution at the same time. But we should also realize that the oil supply is still a finite resource, and therefore people should also really focus their attention to sustainable energy and other energy resources.” - opening attention grabber which introduces the topic focus as well as the main proponent of the solution Female Narrator: "You are listening to Dr Willem Schulte, chief scientist for Reservoir Engineering, Shell and this is Earth ad Sky, Clear Voices for Science..." -Informs the audience of who the previous speaker is as well as providing a context to the discussion
Now do your own version.
At the end of the lesson, you will submit the deconstructed podcast of your group's choice. Post the links/ embedded docs below.

Link to Group Dawkins' Deconstruction: Hobson's Choice
Link to Group Darwin's Deconstruction: Mr Brown
Link to Group Hawking's Deconstruction: The Future of Oil
Link to Group Newton's Deconstruction: Hobson's Choice
LESSON 2: Exploring Podcasting - Technical
In this lesson, you will download Audacity or use GarageBand or any other suitable software for creating the podcasts.
By the end of the lesson, the group should also decide on the TOPIC of your podcasts and you will need to submit an outline of the THREE podcast episodes. Post your outline in the forum discussion. Put your group's name in the "Subject" box.
LESSON 3: Creating Episode One
You will spend this lesson creating the first episode. Record your online discussion (via whatever medium) and and send proof of it in an email. By the end of the day, you should publish your first episode. Post the podcast link or embed the RSS feed as well as the episode transcript here.
